Take 10 minutes to interview your partner. Take notes about that person as he or she answers the questions to gather as much information as you can. Skip any questions that don’t apply to your partner, but add extra ones you feel are necessary to fill in gaps. Your purpose is to find out as much about your partner as possible in the time provided. At home tonight, use your interview worksheet and prepare a 1 to 3 minute speech about your partner. Your specific purpose is to tell the class what qualities make your partner special to everyone else in the class. Find the ways that your partner is unique Maybe he/she has four siblings, or has traveled overseas, or can teach dogs to speak or is allergic to chocolate or has a winning streak in Wii Bowling, or loves to read sports statistics or can play the harmonica. Get the picture? Your job as speaker is to look through the information and decide for yourself what makes him/her special. Here's the Interview Questionnaire:
What's next? Plan your speech using the following outline as a guideline (you can vary as long as all parts are covered)
I. Grab our attention (tell a funny story, shocking event, or unique experience about your partner) II. State your partner’s name slowly and clearly III. State your partner’s background a. Birthplace b. Parent’s occupation c. Others in family IV. State other interests from interview sheet V. Conclude with a statement or two that ties the speech together
Note: DO NOT USE “so that’s my partner”, “In conclusion”, “That’s all I have to say” or anything like that. Give us a closing statement that makes us remember him/her.
Rehearse. Don’t memorize your speech word for word. Instead memorize the first sentence of your introduction and your concluding statement. Then memorize the order of your points. Use notes to help you fill in the other aspects of what you want to say. Practice, practice, practice. As odd as it sounds, as you rehearsse, stand in front of a mirror and say it out loud. Use the mirror to help you practice eye contact. Because you’re not memorizing nor are you writing the speech out word for word, it may be different each time. That’s OK! Say it over and over at least 8 times or more until you’re comfortable with it. And relax!!!!
